Abstract submission

The closing date for abstract submission was 31 August. If you wish to submit an abstract after this date, please email the Chair of the Scientific Program Committee. There is no guarantee that abstracts will be accepted after this date.

Call for papers

To complement the exciting lineup of invited speakers at this year's conference, the Scientific Program Committee invites you to submit an abstract for either a contributed oral or poster presentation (or both if you're keen!) on any biometrical topic but particularly on research and applications aligned with this year's conference theme. Prizes will be awarded for the best talk and poster presented by a young statistician.

Abstracts will be accepted by electronic submission only. Abstracts should be written using the abstract template and submitted via abstracts@biometrics.org.au.

Please read the instructions for authors before submitting your abstract and take note of the key dates for presenters.

Oral vs Poster presentation

Oral presentations will be limited to 15 minutes, with an additional 5 minutes allotted per presenter for questions/discussion. We strongly discourage the use of overhead transparency projectors and would prefer presenters to use electronic methods of presentation such as PowerPoint or Adobe Acrobat.

As an alternative to giving an oral presentation, you may like to think about creating a poster to summarise your work. Poster sessions have typically been underrated in the past, which is a shame given the amount of work that goes into creating a good poster. As such, the committee will schedule a dedicated poster session into the program that will enable you to showcase your poster to potentially all conference delegates (unlike contributed orals that will be presented in parallel sessions). Note that authors of posters should plan to attend their posters during this session in order to answer potential questions about their work.

Authors will be informed of their acceptance and method of presentation by Friday 14 September. The program committee will endeavour to accommodate your preferred method of presentation, however as each format will form an integral element of the conference, the program committee reserves the right to assign papers to either oral or poster presentation if necessary.

Detailed poster preparation and oral presentation guidelines will be sent with the notification of acceptance. In the meantime, we recommend those participants who are presenting a talk or poster look at the advice prepared by the School of Mathematics and Applied Statistics at the University of Wollongong, NSW on Guidelines for preparing oral and poster presentations.

Instructions for authors

  1. Please use the template provided to write your abstract. This will help enormously with the huge task of putting the program book together.
  2. The total length of your abstract should be no more than one page including references i.e. a maximum of about 300 words.
  3. Please use a Times New Roman font of size 12, as dictated by the template instructions.
  4. Please avoid too many mathematical expressions as they may detract from the main ideas in your paper.
  5. With referencing, we would prefer the following brief format:
    Besag (1994, JRSSB 56, 591-2).
  6. Please indicate whether you would prefer to make an oral or poster presentation by checking the appropriate box on the template.
  7. Email your abstract as an attachment to abstracts@biometrics.org.au
